Losing It

Maybe the rhetorical starting point here should be "Can you lose it if you never had it to begin with" but I think we'll just pass that one over.

What I'm talking about here is the 'other' side of vintage racing. I've rarely heard it said, so maybe it's just me. But I reckon there are others in the same boat.

Back in my youth I was a pretty hard core bike rider - street, dirt, racing etc. I was probably of average to above average ability depending on the discipline,… Continue

Confessions of a Thumper Rider (Part 2)

As you'll recall from Part 1, I've somehow lost the plot and become a Thumper fanatic. Persevering in the face of reason with a modified SP370 in an attempt to prove to myself and the rest of the world that a four-stroke trailbike is indeed the path to Nirvana, I've face-planted good and hard into the realisation that the concept is good but the mechanism woefully lacking. Or put another way, the SP370 isn't the path to Thumper salvation.

Of course I always knew this. My problem had… Continue

Confessions of a Thumper Rider (Part 1)

These days, I race vintage MX on a small bore 2-stroke - an RM125M. I've also got a 1980 YZ250 under restoration. And I race some modern grasstrack on an 05 YZ125. Before that were a few more bikes like an RM400N and a Husky CR500. All 2-strokes. I like the little zingers especially - light, fast, manoeuverable, and cheap to run. Yep, I like my 2-strokes.

But it wasn't always that way.

Like many I started out on a small bore two-stroke - a GT80MX way back in 1975. But I… Continue

Resto Blues

You know, this restoring old dirtbikes is a helluva fun thing, but man is it expensive!

When I first got into the whole vintage thing, it blew me away as I bought up big on old magazines and assorted memorobilia, snaffled a few basket cases to do up, and attended my first ever vintage MX events.

This is back in 1998 or so, mind you, so I was hardly in the vanguard of the scene. But it was still relatively early in the piece and most people didn't have a clue that there was such… Continue

Hi Graeme

Good to know.  I am amazed that you let it go, you were so persistent in trying to buy it!

It was probably the only legally road registered HL500 in the world?

Cheers

Gordon

This one is a 1981 yz 250 H Graeme ....there was some talk of the 6 speed boxes in the G model 1980 ruining gears so the five speeder [this one] has wider gears other than that they are as reliable as axes.
