HEAVEN Round 3 - Fairbairn Park Canberra
15 May 2005

Scrutineering gets underway

Mmmm... nice British Iron eye candy...

Riders briefing - trying to keep the pack under control.

Possibly the world's best looking Evo Husky 4-stroke.

Giving it heaps off the top corner.

Brendan Wollenweber blitzed the Juniors on this tidy Husky 125.

The Pre 75 250s through the flat track corner.

Airborne Maico.

Local rider Lex Holcombe on the gas.

Start of the Pre-85s.

High pressure racing from the fast guys in Pre-85.

Taking it easy in practice.

Dennis Myers punting the good ship Katy Emm.

Fernando Franco had a good day keeping the bike clean out front.

Martin Dalitz and Bill Campbell hard at it.

A lone BSA upheld British honour. Sounded great too!

Mr Fastbits not only rode well, he helped sponsor the event.

Yammie MX - nice bike, quick rider.

More KTMs!

The cutting was pretty goopy but rewarded holding the gas on...

Round 3 of the 2005 On Any Sunday series went off under clear blue skies and mild temperatures at the ACT MCC's Fairbairn track.

The ACT VMX boys put plenty of hours into track prep and the result was a smooth fast track with enough twists, turns and jumps to satisfy everyone.

Your OzVMX Webmaster went along for a day's racing on the mighty HL500. And that is what I had, at least up until it stopped shifting during the last Evo Open race. I shudder at the thought of having to strip that engine to find out what went wrong...

Here's a short impression of the day along with a few pics taken before the batteries went dead (forgot to charge them up, didn't I?). Click on the thumbnails to see the full size pic.

Race day dawned clear and cool and by 7.30 AM the pits were rapidly filling with eager riders. Racing got underway around 10.30 and for the most part the day went pretty smoothly.

Some great racing was on show in most classes, with the Evo classes and Pre 85s boasting full grids which made for some great first corner action.

It was great too to see several of the quicker riders clearing the back tabletops, especially on some of the Pre-78 bikes! I'm always amazed at just how much the quality of the racing and the bikes themselves have increased since I first went to a VMX meeting back in the mid 90s.

A big downer on the day was Mr ACT VMX Dennis Myers' big get off in the last Evo Open event. It looks like he may have copped a broken collarbone which is an unlucky reward for all the effort he put in for this meeting.

Otherwise it was an excellent event with pretty much everything dropping into place. For me it was the first vintage event in over a year so it was great to see so many old bikes and familiar faces at my local track.

Of course, a big thank you must go out to event sponsors fastbits.com.au and Joe's Motorcycle Wreckers, and to the ACT Motorcycle Club for all their help.
