QVMX 2005 Series - Round 4

The QVMX Club held Round 4 of their 2005 series at Coles Creek near Gympie on 24 July 2005. This event also included a round of the Pre 85 Challenge Series. Here Cokeman tells us how things transpired on the day.

Back to normal track conditions at Coles Creek for this round after a very dry Round 1. A little slippery for the first round of races, but just perfect after lunch, probably the best riding conditions we have had so far this year.

A special thanks to Big Bill and the pre 85 guys for the fabulous track layout and setup. Thanks also to the NSW guys who made the effort to come and ride. Pre 78 numbers where a little down but we still managed to have over 50 riders who enjoyed some terrific riding. 3 rounds each plus some all in races at the end of the day.

Definitely the day's highlight was to have Australias No 1 and No 2 Evo racers Glen Bell and Geoff Holmes at our club day. Glen on a KX250 (26) and Geoff on a YZ465 (7). Just awesome to watch these guys race.

We thought it fitting to have an invitational race for them as well as our clubs top riders and the guys from NSW, what a moto!!!! The pre 85 thing has been voted on by all club members and has been accepted as a new class for the club. This was done to maintain the viability of the
club and to help secure its position as the premier natural terrain VMX club in Queensland.

All vintage classes welcome from pre 65 to pre 85. No accidents or injuries just a bunch of old blokes on old bikes having a bunch of fun!!!

See you all at Caboolture on September 4 for Round 5.

The famous Forum Doctor also wandered along for a look, and although was only able to spend a couple of hours there he came away impressed and keen to one day join the fun. Here's his thoughts on the day...

I made the trip up to Coles Creek last Sunday to check out the QVMX race day. I could only stay a couple of hours early in the day unfortunately so I didn't get any race results. I can tell you there was a light misty rain falling for the duration and for the day prior. Cool but not cold and ideal conditions one would think.

I arrived early and the track looked great at the outset. Unbeknown to all, lurking underneath the nice grassy cover was one very slick slippery clay surface. The few riders I did manage to speak to mentioned they were having trouble coming to grips with the greasiness and extreme flexabily may be the ticket for the day.

There was a vote held on the day for the admission of the pre 85 classes and history says that pre 85s are now par for the course at QVMX. Sadly there were very few pre 75 bikes. I counted around 5 or 6 and the numbers in the pre 78s were also quite down. The evo classes were much more populated and the pre 85s also had a fair showing.

Personally, disc brakes and water cooling just don't sit right with me under the vintage guise but I am a little biased and it's a huge can of worms as you know.

All in all it turned out a pretty good day but for the lack of pre 78 entries. One will have to extract one's finger and start making up those said numbers :)
