Round Eight of the OzVMX Vintage Dirt Series. Fairbairn
Park, 19 November 2006
The ACTMCC held round 8 of its club series for 06 on Sunday 19 November.
And it sure was warm. The heat took it out of those brave souls who fronted
up for the Pre85 events, but we still went for it anyway. Sadly a few
of the out of town boys had bike problems, ranging from electrical problems
to broken throttle cables. The joys of racing 20 year old bikes!
The club went overboard watering the track, and although it didn't get
too dusty, it did make sure that almost everyone in the class had a bit
of a lie down at some stage. Some of us (no names mentioned, eh Gezza)
even managed that several times.
I rode the big Husky for an absolutely dismal showing, DNFing all but
one race. Nonetheless, a few of the boys were right into it, especially
Dennis, Krafty, Mark and Gezza who are all up the pointy end of the field
in the season's point score. For me though the ride of the day was Gezza's
come from behind effort in the second Pre 85 race. Caught napping at the
start, he got away about 20 seconds behind the field. But he rode like
Bob Hannah's faster brother, slowly but surely reeling them in one by
one. He would have had 3rd in the bag but for a slight bobble about 4
corners out from the finish. Good one!
Hard luck stories there were for sure, but poor old Mr KTM's is probably
the worst of the day. Finally leading a race and in with a chance of a
big win, Dennis threw it away within sight of the finish line. He copped
a ribbing about that one!
So, the OzVMX Pre85 series is winding its way down to the final round
on 26 November. Who'll get to put the big shiny trophy on their mantlepiece?
While you wonder, check out some photos from the day, courtesy of Mr
Magoo's photographic skills par excellence.
