Round One of the OzVMX Vintage Dirt Series. Fairbairn
Park, 26 Feb 2006
A total of four hardy souls entered this class for round one of this
auspicious new series - just enough to make it a battle proper. A good
range of bikes too - three 1983 250 MX'ers (Honda, Yamaha and Husky) and
Dennis Myers' trusty '81 KTM 250. The ACT Motorcycle Club's MX track had
just reopened after a severe bout of Environment Closure Order-itis which
lasted for five months. The club hung in there and reopened it was, plus
several weekends of working bee's to get it back to stratch.
Race
one saw Krafty (Edwin Kraft, from Cooma) take an early lead on his YZ,
one which he kept the whole day long, much to the ire of us locals who
essentially diced for spots two and three. Gezza, Lex and Dennis diced
all together for a while till Gezza cleverly spun out trying to dive in
under Myers. Down he went, and when he got up, his gear lever stayed on
the ground (half of it anyway). He bravely battled on (a real hero, this
guy, in my mind), missing gear changes all over the place, to come in
fourth behind Krafty, Dennis and Lex.
A bit of shifter work on the CR's gearlever saw Gezza back on the start
line, and he was serious this time. They all took off down the fourth
gear start straight and a couple of lead changes later (ok, 2nd and 3nd
place changes), saw Gezza come in afore Lex (who, admittedly was coming
back to mx after six surgery-enforced months off) for third place. None
of them saw Krafty much after the first corner.
Race four saw Dennis and Gezza gain a little on Krafty, who could at
least be seen with a telescope this time. Back in the pits, everyone agreed
the track changes have been for the better - the upramp on the far first
tabletop has been made less steep (meaning you don't launch quite into
space, just the stratosphere), and that the sutters were the better for
being changed into one of them 'rythym sections'. Instead of each stutter
being shaped like an upside down half circle, the were now like mini jumps.
Meaning even us pre-85 riders could jump two at a time and get a bit of
that rythym thing going (amazing I agree!).

Race four - uh-oh, poor Gezza, the CR let him down and burbled to a stop
just after the first corner (shame - he was hot on the heels of Krafty
this time, determined to do him once and for good, or so he says). Gezza
watches the rest of the race from the middle of the track, as he pushes
the 220-pounder back to the pits. Bit of consistency needed there for
better race results Gezza.
Oh yeah, the rest of the club's races were good viewing too. With over
150 entrants, a few bikes were punted round the track that day.....
Vintage Dirt Series Round One results:
1 Edwin Kraft
2 Dennis Myers
3 Lex Holcombe
Gezza
PS Wanted: more Pre-85 entrants, to put pressure on that Cooma guy and
to keep Gezza away from a placing - not good for his ego.
